Vilcanota Ausangate Trek

Your journey starts with hotel pickup and a visit to the Pikillacta complex, legacy of the Wari culture, where pre-Inca structures reveal an ancient worldview. This first encounter with ancestral history sets the spiritual tone of the trek. Afterward, the drive passes through Andean towns such as Ocongate and Tinki, where rural life is reflected in markets, textiles, and traditional architecture. In Tinki, after a brief look around, we begin the hike toward Upis, surrounded by high-Andean scenery, grasslands, and the first views of Apu Ausangate, rising as a silent guardian.

Camp is set near the natural hot springs, where you can soak in restorative waters while admiring the snowy horizon. It’s the perfect ending to a day that blends archaeology, living culture, and sacred nature—preparing body and spirit for what comes next.

Today brings the climb to Arapa Pass (4,850 m a.s.l.), the first major challenge of the trek. As we gain altitude, the landscape transforms: grasslands give way to rocky formations, glaciers, and snowcapped summits that announce the presence of Apu Ausangate, spiritual guardian of the Vilcanota Range. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views and an atmosphere of absolute silence.

After lunch in the mountains, we begin our descent toward Pucacocha Lake, a turquoise mirror fed by waters flowing directly from the snowcapped peak. Along the way, you’ll see crystal-clear waterfalls, unique geological formations, and an energy that invites contemplation. Camp is set on the lakeshore, surrounded by snowcapped peaks and sacred reflections.

This second day marks a deep entry into the heart of Vilcanota, where nature reveals itself in its purest form and the traveler begins to feel the inner transformation that only the Andes can awaken.

The trail continues among high-altitude turquoise lakes—sacred mirrors reflecting the immensity of Ausangate. The landscape becomes wilder and more spiritual as the route winds between glaciers, rocky formations, and waterfalls that spring directly from the ice. Every step reveals a new corner of the Vilcanota Range, where silence and pristine surroundings invite introspection.

The climb culminates at Palomani Pass (4,800 m a.s.l.), one of the highest and most demanding points of the trek. From here, you’ll enjoy a privileged view of Ausangate’s full contour, as well as the snowcapped peaks Mariposa Peak and Caracol Peak, standing like guardians on the horizon. The energy at this point feels intense—almost ceremonial.

After a short rest, we descend toward Chilca Phinaya, a rural settlement surrounded by grasslands and Andean silence. Camp is set in this remote environment, where the night unfolds beneath a star-filled sky and the presence of the Apu feels closer than ever.

We enter the Jampa Valley, where the landscape softens and living culture appears in every encounter. Along the trail, we observe locals in their daily herding work with llamas and alpacas—silent guardians of this sacred land. You may also purchase traditional textiles, crafted with ancestral techniques that reflect the Andean worldview.

The route becomes a circular trail as we skirt Ticllacocha Lake, a high-altitude mirror that accompanies the hike with turquoise reflections and a contemplative atmosphere. Then comes the ascent to the final great challenge of the trek: Jampa Pass (4,650 m a.s.l.), surrounded by snowcapped summits and glacial valleys. The energy here is serene, almost meditative.

At the scheduled time, we descend to our camp at Pachaspata, a quiet and open setting—ideal for resting and processing everything lived. This day represents the balance between physical effort, human connection, and spiritual alignment with the Vilcanota Range.

For the final stretch, we descend from Pachaspata through open landscapes, high grasslands, and silences that invite reflection. As we approach the village of Pacchanta, Ausangate slowly bids farewell, leaving its mark in every view and every step.

In Pacchanta, you’ll enjoy a well-earned rest in the natural hot springs, surrounded by mountains and living traditions. It’s also a chance to share time with locals, hear their stories, purchase traditional textiles, and close the trek with an authentic human connection.

At the time indicated by our guide, we board the tourist vehicle back to Cusco, arriving at approximately 18:00. The body returns tired, but the spirit comes back renewed—carrying memories, lessons, and an energy that only the Vilcanota Range can offer.

This day doesn’t mark the end of the journey, but the beginning of an inner transformation that stays with you long after you leave the mountains.
