Clear answers for an unforgettable adventure
Before embarking on a great journey, many questions arise about the destination, the preparation, and the experience itself. And if your trip includes the legendary Inca Trail to MachuPicchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, it’s only natural to want to know everything. Here we answer the most frequently asked questions so you can live this adventure with confidence, excitement, and peace of mind.
🧭 What is the Inca Trail to MachuPicchu?
It’s Peru’s most iconic trekking route—and without a doubt, one of the most thrilling in the world. The Inca Trail connects Andean landscapes, archaeological sites, and biodiversity zones all the way to the majestic citadel of MachuPicchu.
Along the way, you’ll climb ancient stone staircases, cross cloud forests, reach natural viewpoints, and sleep in campsites surrounded by nature. Each day is marked by camaraderie, shared effort, and the joy of moving toward a goal that’s not just geographic—but deeply spiritual.
⏱️ How long does the Inca Trail and its alternative treks take?
The duration depends on the tour you choose and the level of adventure you’re looking for:
- Classic Inca Trail: 5 days / 4 nights. Maximum altitude: 4200 masl
- Short Inca Trail: 2 days / 1 night. Maximum altitude: 2650 masl
- Choquequirao Trek: 8 days / 7 nights. A demanding route to another Inca citadel
- Salkantay Trek: 6 days / 5 nights. A scenic alternative crossing the Salkantay glacier
Each option offers a unique experience, but all share the same spirit: discovering the Inca legacy while walking through unforgettable landscapes.
🧗 Is the Inca Trail difficult or dangerous?
It’s a demanding route, with ascents and descents through mountainous terrain. It’s not dangerous if you follow the guide’s instructions and stay within authorized areas. Expect stone staircases, narrow paths, and altitude changes.
Good physical preparation will make the experience challenging but rewarding. The key lies in respecting the environment, listening to your body, and trusting your guide.
🏃 Do I need to train before the Inca Trail?
Yes. While you don’t need to be an athlete, it’s recommended to have cardiovascular endurance and strong legs. The hike can last 6 to 8 hours per day.
We suggest long walks in your city weeks before the trip, stair climbing, leg strengthening, and acclimatizing in Cusco at least one day before the tour begins. Good preparation will help you enjoy every stretch without exhaustion or discomfort.
🫁 Will I be affected by altitude sickness?
Not everyone experiences it, but prevention is key. To avoid symptoms like headaches or shortness of breath, we recommend:
- Acclimatizing in Cusco
- Avoiding alcohol before the tour
- Staying hydrated
- Drinking coca tea or taking altitude pills recommended by your doctor or guide
If symptoms become intense, your guide will take immediate action. Traveler safety is always the priority.
🎒 What should I pack for the Inca Trail?
The weather shifts between cold and warm, so bring clothing for both. Most important: well-worn hiking shoes to avoid blisters. You’ll also need:
- Sleeping bag
- Rain poncho
- Flashlight, hat, insect repellent, sunscreen
- Personal hygiene items
- Lightweight backpack with padded straps
Everything you pack should be functional, comfortable, and durable. Less is more.
🏕️ Where do you sleep on the Inca Trail?
In tents set up in authorized camping areas. Porters carry all the necessary equipment and handle camp setup.
You’ll sleep surrounded by nature, under starry skies, with the sounds of the Andes as your lullaby. It’s an essential part of the experience.
🍽️ Do I need to bring food?
No. The agency takes care of all meals. We work with specialized trail chefs who prepare traditional Peruvian dishes that are nutritious and balanced for trekking.
Menus include pasta, rice, chicken, fresh vegetables, assorted fruits, and options tailored to each traveler. Eating well is part of the journey.
🚫 Can I hike the Inca Trail on my own?
No. The Inca Trail can only be done with an authorized travel agency and certified guides approved by the Regional Directorate of Culture in Cusco.
Hikes are done in groups of up to 40 people, including guides, porters, and cooks. Regulations ensure safety, conservation, and quality of experience.
