Faith, tradition, and procession in the heart of Qosqo
Every year, Cusco pauses to celebrate its most solemn religious festivity: Corpus Christi, a living expression of Catholic faith and Andean heritage. In 2025, the celebration took place on Thursday, June 19, with events that transformed the city into a stage of devotion, music, and culture.
⛪ Wednesday: the Entrance of the Saints
On Wednesday, June 18, the traditional Entrance of the Saints was held. From their parish churches, the sacred images were carried in procession to the Cathedral of Cusco, accompanied by mayordomos, musicians, dancers, and devoted followers. This day is especially emotional, marked by the famous “race” between San Sebastián and San Jerónimo, who compete to reach the square first.
📿 Thursday: main day and procession
On Thursday, June 19, fifteen images of saints and virgins paraded through the Plaza de Armas, led by the Silver Carriage bearing the custody of the Blessed Sacrament. It’s a moment of deep spirituality that brings together thousands of Cusqueños and visitors in an atmosphere of peace, faith, and reverence.

🔁 Octave: return to the parishes
Eight days later, on Thursday, June 26, the Octave of Corpus Christi was celebrated. The images returned to their original churches, closing the festive cycle with another symbolic and heartfelt procession.
🍽️ Chiriuchu: the flavor of tradition
During these days, Cusco’s streets and markets offer Chiriuchu, the emblematic dish of Corpus Christi. This traditional delicacy includes guinea pig, chicken, charqui (dried meat), cochayuyo (seaweed), fish roe, toasted corn, cheese, sausages, and torreja, among other ingredients that reflect the richness of Cusco’s culinary heritage.
